James was the VP of Operations and Procurement at Zero Motorcycles Inc. and previously worked as the Senior Director of Sourcing and Procurement at Owlet Baby Care. He studied Mechanical Engineering at Western Kentucky University and worked in Contract Manufacturing with Burton Snowboards.

If you are a new entrepreneur starting out during the pandemic, that doesn’t mean your business has to suffer. Although launching a business at such times may be very challenging due to changing consumer needs, preferences, and levels of income, a good entrepreneur does their homework and uses business growth strategies to propel their business forward.
When COVID-19 hit, many people had to shift to being home 24/7. This big shift had a positive impact on James Milam's business, Know Headphones. Although he came across many naysayers, he pushed through and went ahead to launch his business.
To become successful, you need to be very deliberate in your marketing strategies. You need to educate your consumers and help them understand the benefits of getting your product, in light of the current situation. James ensured that his consumers understood the benefits of buying his headphones at a time when most employees and students were forced to work and study from home, leveraging the moment for his brand.
The Importance of Being a Persistent Entrepreneur
As an entrepreneur, you cannot be certain about everything that happens in the business world. You’re not going to know everything about building an eCommerce business until you have walked the path and learned from experience. Many times you will be forced to make difficult decisions for the good of your company, even if that means letting go of some of your team members or dropping clients.
This is what James did as he built Know Headphones. He had to drop his marketing agency, and in the process, he and his team had to make the hard decision of learning as much as they could about marketing so they could do everything in-house. They successfully did this in 45 days by analyzing their existing data and finding out what had previously worked and where they could make changes.
In addition, you have to be persistent in your entrepreneurial journey. You have to hire the right people to join your team, be adaptable, and remain flexible. You have to be ready to pivot where necessary because entrepreneurship involves a lot of highs and lows.
